STOCKS ON THE MOVE

* Hawkins Cookers Ltd. rose 18.7 percent to 113.50 rupees after the company's board late on Monday approved a dividend of seven rupees a share.

* Gayatri Projects Ltd. was up 4.5 percent at 281 rupees after the construction firm said it had secured five orders totalling 4.55 billion rupees.

* Bajaj Electricals Ltd. gained 4.2 percent to 554.85 rupees ahead of a board meeting to consider a bonus issue of shares.

* Drug maker Strides Arcolab Ltd. was 6.2 percent up at 338 rupees after it said it would acquire fermentation assets of an Italian firm.

STOCKS ON THE MOVE May 28

STOCKS ON THE MOVE

* Tata Tea Ltd. rose to a 52-week high of 990 rupees after it agreed to sell its 30 percent stake in U.S. vitamin water maker Glaceau to Coca Cola Co. for $1.2 billion. The stock was trading up 4 percent at 950.40 rupees.

* Retail brokerage India Infoline Ltd. jumped 31.2 percent to 585 rupees after four top officials from rival brokerage CLSA India joined the company. Brokers said this would help the firm significantly expand its client base.

* Auto parts maker Omax Autos Ltd. gained nearly 3 percent to 92.70 rupees after its board approved selling a part of its stake in subsidiary Omax Steels Ltd.

* Binani Cement Ltd. made its stock market debut at

79 rupees, up 5.3 percent from its issue price of 75 rupees. The stocks were trading at 67.95 rupees.

STOCK ON THE MOVE May 23

* Network 18 Fincap Ltd. rose by its maximum daily limit of 5 percent to 599.65 rupees after media conglomerate Viacom Inc. and group company TV18 formed an equal joint venture for general entertainment business in the country.
* Drug maker Sun Pharmaceutical Ltd. extended Monday's gains and rose nearly 2 percent to 1,084 rupees after Israel's Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. said Sun's $454 million deal to purchase it would go ahead after a ruling by a Tel Aviv court.
* Raj Television Ltd. extended recent gains and rose 10 percent to 288.30 rupees after more than 2 percent, or 272,149 shares, changed hands in a block deal on the BSE at 288.30 rupees.
* Everest Kanto Cylinder Ltd. fell 7.5 percent to 1,058 rupees after its net profit slumped to 51.2 million rupees from 102.1 million rupees a year ago.

ABB wins $70 mln order for Delhi metro expansion

Sector leader Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. slipped 0.6 percent and second ranked Infosys Technologies fell 0.7 percent.

Top mortgage firm HDFC rose 4.4 percent to 1,794 rupees, its strongest close in more than three months, as investors factored in an increased valuation of its insurance and mutual fund business after media reports of high valuation for rival ICICI Bank's insurance business.


The 30-share benchmark BSE index rose 35.12 points to 14,453.72, with 16 components gaining, its highest close since Feb. 9 -- the day it hit a record high of 14,723.88.

The 50-share NSE index ended up 0.40 percent at a record close of 4,278.10, after hitting a record high of 4,281.60, above its previous high of 4,269.35 set on Monday.

* Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. rose more than 5 percent to 1,064.15
rupees after the firm said it had agreed to buy Israel's Taro

* Power utility Reliance Energy Ltd. rose 7.9 percent to 551.70 rupees
after 13.24 million shares, or 5.8 percent of its share capital, changed
hands in a single deal on the BSE at 517 rupees each.

* Nava Bharat Ventures Ltd. jumped 6 percent to 128.40 rupees after the
company said it planned to invest up to 7 billion rupees in a special
purpose vehicle to set up a power project in Orissa, and up to 550 million
rupees for 51 percent of a firm building a special economic zone in
Hyderabad.

* Real estate developer Lok Housing and Construction Ltd. gained almost 5
percent to 187.10 rupees after its board approved raising up to $200
million in the domestic or global markets.

Results of NSE Weekly Stock Contest 2

The results of the NSE weekly Stock Market Prediction Contest is out.
Dr.Manoj Swaminathan is the winner this week(14th to 18th May 2007).
His prediction was UTV Software.
The stock appreciated 41 per cent last week, hitting an all-time high of Rs 461 during intra-day trades. The stock closed at Rs 435.20 on May 18 against previous week’s close of Rs 309.64 on the BSE on the news that UTV Software to launch 8 channels .Planning to invest $200 million, which will be distributed to the Gulf region.

* State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd. were down 2-3 percent after London Brent crude rose to an eight-month high and was hovering around $70 a barrel.
* Kamat Hotels India Ltd. rose by its maximum daily limit of 10 percent to 165.05 rupees after the company said its board would meet on May 30 to consider a stock split.

Bajaj Crash on Demerger Day

Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) has announced that the Board of Directors of the Company at its meeting held on May 17, 2007, has approved the Scheme for Demerger (Scheme) of the businesses of the Company.

The demerger of

(1) the two and three wheeler manufacturing undertaking (Manufacturing Undertaking) and

(2) its Strategic Businesses comprising the generation of wind-energy using wind-farms,
the insurance business conducted through its joint ventures Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Ltd and
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company Ltd, financial products distribution business conducted through Bajaj Allianz Financial Distributors Ltd
and interests in retail / consumer finance business conducted by Bajaj Auto Finance Ltd. (collectively, the Strategic Business Undertaking)

to two newly incorporated subsidiaries,

Bajaj Holdings and Investment Ltd (BHIL)
Bajaj Finserv Ltd (BFL).

Motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto fell as much as 10.5 percent in
the last part of the session, after it said its insurance joint
venture partner -- Germany's Allianz -- had the option to raise
its stake to 50 percent from the current 26 percent, if the
government raises its current investment ceiling.

It closed 6.7 percent lower at 2,500.30 rupees

* United Spirits Ltd. rose 6.9 percent to 895.20 rupees after the UB group company said it had acquired Scottish spirits maker Whyte & Mackay for 595 million pound sterling ($1.2 billion).
* UTV Software Communications Ltd. rose by its maximum daily limit of 20 percent to 405 rupees on market talk of a share placement in the media company, brokers said. The shares have seen strong interest from a domestic mutual fund, they said.

* Suzlon Energy Ltd. fell 6.5 percent to 1,169.50 rupees after the wind turbine maker said March quarter consolidated net profit after minority interest dipped 3.4 percent to 3.59 billion rupees.
* Whirlpool of India Ltd. jumped 7.8 percent to 36.75 rupees after the consumer electronics goods maker turned profitable in the March quarter with 60.4 million rupees, compared with a net loss of 31.4 million last year.
* Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd. rose after a block deal was struck for 1 million shares, or 1.25 percent of the stockholding, at 163 rupees each on the National Stock Exchange. The shares were trading 3.9 percent up at 166.70 rupees on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
* PSL Ltd. rose 4 percent to 230 rupees on news the steel pipe maker had got an order worth 1.35 billion rupees from state-run GAIL (India) Ltd. for its Dhabol-Panvel pipeline project.

MUMBAI: Cinevistaas Ltd shares were locked 20 per cent upper circuit limit on Monday. The board has decided to allot upto 18,66500 warrants to the promoters convertible into equity shares of the face value of Rs 10 at a conversion price of Rs 23.50 per s hare. At 1.55 pm, the stock was up 20 per cent at Rs 41.90 on the NSE on volumes of 64,796 shares.
