India's oil ministry has sought a one rupee cut in excise duty on diesel to reduce retail prices and curb inflation
Govt cuts duty on cement, capital goods to cool inflation

The following customs duties were cut:
portland cement to zero from 12.5 percent;
ferro-alloys stainless steel and other alloy steel to 5 percent from 7.5 percent;
calcined alumina to 5 percent from 7.5 percent;
pipes and tubes of aluminium,
copper and zinc to 7.5 percent from 12.5 percent.

Other cuts included:
project imports to 7.5 percent from 12.5 percent;
specified capital goods and their parts to 7.5 percent from 12.5 percent.
And extended the project import rate of 7.5 percent to airport development and metro rail projects, the statement said.

The government also reduced the customs duty on inorganic chemicals like halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine), sulphur, carbon, hydrogen, rare gases and alkali metals to 5 percent from 10 percent.

Customs duty on carbon black feed stock was reduced to 5 percent from 10 percent, and refractories to 5 percent from 7.5 percent, and specified raw materials of refractories to 5 percent from 10.75 percent. Customs duty on primary and semi-finished forms of copper, aluminium, zinc, tin, other base metals was reduced to 5 percent from 7.5 percent.

India shares climb to new high

Indian shares rose 0.61 percent on Thursday to a record close -- their fifth so far in January -- led by gains in top private firm Reliance Industries Ltd. ahead of the release of its quarterly results. The 30-issue main BSE index ended 86.41 points higher at 14,217.75, after hitting a lifetime high of 14,325.92 during trade -- its fourth record high in the last five days.

Reliance Industries rose 1.3 percent to 1,367 rupees, having hit a record high of 1,383.50 rupees during trade. After the market closed, it reported a 58 percent rise in net profit, well ahead of market forecasts.

Oil & Natural Gas Corp. rose 2.5 percent to 916.85 rupees after its chairman said the state-run firm's natural gas find off India's east coast was commercially viable.

Ranbaxy Laboratories, India's top drug maker by sales, reported an almost three times rise in quarterly profit and forecast revenues to rise 15 percent in 2007, but it shares ended down 0.3 percent at 430.20 rupees.


STOCKS THAT MOVED

* Drug maker Biocon Ltd. rose 10.5 percent to 410.25 rupees after its Oct-Dec net profit rose 45 percent to 475.1 million rupees.

* NIIT Technologies Ltd. surged 20 percent, its maximum daily trading limit, to 409.50 rupees after its Oct-Dec net profit more than doubled to 301 million rupees.

* Iron maker Tata Metaliks Ltd. fell 8.1 percent to 116.20 rupees after it reported a net loss of 11.2 million rupees for the December quarter from a net profit of 72.4 million rupees a year ago.

Shares in Infosys ended up 0.7 percent, after falling as much as 3.2 percent as investors baulked at its lower-than-expected forecast for the year ending March, in a Mumbai market that rose 2.0 percent.

The top ten contracts contributed to around 45% of the total traded volume in Futures on individual securities. INFOSYSTCH was the most active future contracts on individual securities traded today with 34155 contracts and RELIANCE was the next most active futures contracts with 33485 contracts being traded.

PSLV SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES FOUR SATELLITES
The 680 kg main payload, CARTOSAT-2, mounted over DLA, was the first satellite to be injected into orbit at 981.3 sec after lift-off at an altitude of 639 km. About 45 sec later, DLA with the 6 kg PEHUENSAT-1 mounted on it, was separated. 120 sec later, the 550 kg Space capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE-1) mounted inside DLA was separated and finally, 190 sec later, the 56 kg LAPAN-TUBSAT, mounted on the equipment bay of PSLV fourth stage was separated.

LAPAN-TUBSAT and PEHUENSAT-1 were launched under commercial agreements.

CARTOSAT-2, is an advanced remote sensing satellite capable of providing scene-specific spot imagery. It has a Panchromatic camera (PAN) to provide imageries with a spatial resolution of better than one metre and a swath of 9.6 km

The market sentiment continued to remain depressed today, soon after opening market witnessed a sharp fall. NIFTY remained in the negative territory throughout the trading session and witnessed a further fall in last hour of trading. The S&P CNX Nifty closed at 3850.30; down by 61.10 points.

U.S. light crude oil extended losses, falling 1.1 percent to $55 a barrel, having hit an 18-month low and driven the Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index <.CRB> to its lowest in nearly two years on Tuesday. Analysts said the 9 percent fall in crude prices since the start of the year had forced some investors beating on higher oil prices to cut their losses and sell assets across markets.

Nuclear Deal Confusion...

Under the bill, the U.S. president would be required to end the export of nuclear materials if India tests another nuclear device. It tested one in 1998.

It also does not guarantee uninterrupted fuel supplies for reactors and prevents India from reprocessing spent fuel.
These conditions were not acceptable to India and this had been conveyed to the U.S.
